Non-Life Insurance Market in Nepal: Opportunities and Threats

First of all, Study Group for Banking and Insurance would like to thank PUSOB (Pokhara University School of Business) for giving the opportunity to conduct a one day seminar on Non-Life Insurance Market in Nepal: Opportunities and Threats at Tuki Resort which was organized by SGBI and sponsored by Rastriya Beema Company Ltd., government owned company. The program was very interesting which provided in depth exploration to participants about the current state of non-life Insurance in Nepal.

The program was held from 10 am to 5 pm. Where, the registration was open from 10:00 to 10:30 am and the program was inaugurated at 10:40 am by Chief Guest Prof. Hari Bahadur Khadka (Faculty of Management of studies, Pokhara University, Dean).  

The program was initiated from the introductory welcome speech from SGBI board member Ms. Jharana Gurung. The seminar was led by the speeches from various guests, Co-ordinator, Corporate Relations and Placement Cell Mr. Ravindra Prasad Baral, Chief Guest and Faculty of Management of Studies, Pokhara University Dean, Prof. Hari Bahadur Khadka and, Guest, President of Pokhara University Student Union, Sunil Timilsina. Furthermore, the general speech section was concluded by the farewell speech from the chairman of Nepal Insurance Professional Society, Keshav Raj Dhakal.

The slot of time was four sessions. Therefore, first session (11:45am to 12:45pm) was presentation by Mr. Hari Datta Bhatta on types and coverage of cattle and crops insurance. The second session (12:45pm to 01:45pm) was a presentation on Hydro Risk management, where he highlighted importance and risk covered by non life insurance policies like; machinery breakdown policies, engineering and contractual, boiler policies and so on. After that there was lunch break from 01:45pm to 02:15pm.

Third technical session (02:15pm to 03:15pm) was handled by Er. Surendra Bahadur Godar.  Mr. Godar thoroughly explained the procedure of the claim settlement in property insurance in Nepal highlighting the role, duties and qualification of surveyor. Thereafter, the fourth session was taken by Dr. Rabindra Ghimire in contemporary issues in insurance industry inside and outside the country. After that a question and answer session was held, where participants asked various question to the insurance professionals and discussed other issues in insurance industry in Nepal eliminating their confusion and queries. The total duration of floor discussion was 1 hour, from 03:15pm to 04:15pm.

The seminar ended at 4:30 pm, closed by the president of SGBI, Ms. Anjali Poudel with the closing speech. Certificate was distributed by the resource person at the end of the session.
